I had ME/CFS (I called it fatigue) from 2012-2016. I got a viral infection in February 2012, but I didn’t stop and let myself recover. By March I was floored. I scraped through a masters and was feeling great by July 2012, but after a week of hard training I was back in bed. For years I looked back on that time thinking if I had only just rested for a little longer, I wouldn't still be in this mess.
Through desperation I tried every intervention I came across to get back to the person I was. Not all of it worked or suited me, but I was desperate and was willing to try anything.
One intervention I relied on was psychotherapy to help me manage this illness. I was referred to a Therapist with a history of fatigue which was comforting to discuss in session. Therapy doesn’t suit everyone at the time they attend, and it does not directly reduce fatigue but it can help with the following:
reducing stress or difficult emotions,
developing pacing strategies,
accepting what's going on,
integrating fatigue with your life to live as well as possible.
Living as well as possible in the chaos of every day was, I believe, a key factor in my recovery and psychotherapy helped me with this. It is not a magic cure. I didn't wake up one day and the fatigue was gone, but I took one day at a time and gradually started to improve. Thankfully I am fully recovered now.
If you are reading this and are still on the road to recovery I wish you the very best with everything. If you are interested in therapy and think I may be able to help you on your road to recovery, my details can be found below.
